Hello Litterpickers,
for the 28th time, the elements failed to keep the group indoors, a blustery wind on what was a mild January Afternoon was all we had to deal with on Sunday 22nd January.

The team met at The Queensway Inn in Wollescote for the 3rd time in 12 months and headed straight for the copse at the side of The Wychbury Medical Centre at the top of the hill. We still have the video of this very area on the website from 12 months ago and little or nothing had improved since then.

Items found in the copse included, dumbells, brake disks, Tyre’s, a kiddies car, and lots of medicine bottles. Just ninety minutes of hard work later……

The rubbish was inches deep and rotting under leaves

It was almost a pleasant place to be again when we finished.

The team had to endure lots of unknown underfoot risks such as thorns, steep banks and broken glass to achieve such a result and none of the team were from the Wollescote area. Everybody looked very self satisfied and tired over their pint of cider in the Queensway but it was well worth it.

Over 20 sacks of general rubbish was collected and 2 sacks of tins for our cancer charity.

Dudley MBC will be collecting this rubbish today.

We next meet on Sunday February 12th at 2pm at the site of the Formula 1 Autocentre next to The Forge Industrial Estate, Dudley Road Lye. We will head for The River Stour from there armed again with rakes, and clippers. Please ensure you wear good footwear and well protective clothing for this task. We will head for the Windsor Castle Inn for our pint afterwards.

Different year, same rubbish

Hello Litterpickers,

The weather gods were with us yet again for the 27th Tidy Stourbridge Litterpick. Thanks to The Stourbridge News our numbers were boosted to 12 volunteers for what was going to be a difficult couple of hours.

3 teams headed off from The Exchange in Enville Street to cover an area from Bath Road to the East and Lowndes Road to the West, Bradley Road to the North and Enville Street to the South. Tidy Stourbridge tackled a similar area back in July 2010, it was unpleasant back then and little has changed. Lowndes Road and Bradley Street continue to be a blight on the town and what we believe to be Severn Trent owned property opposite Katie Fitzgeralds hadnt seen a litterpicker since we were there last.

25 sacks of rubbish

The group collected 20 general sacks of rubbish and 5 sacks of tins for our cancer charity. Amongst the rubbish was a cassette stereo, a plant trough, 2 broken traffic cones, 2 roadwork bollards, part of a traffic light and a cats collar with a telephone number on it.

The group were unable to complete the clean up on the land opposite Katie Fitzgeralds due to the shear scale of the mess but we will return there over the summer months.

We have now decided where to go on Sunday 12th February, Bagley’s Street Lye and The River Stour at that point are in a real mess according to one of our volunteers. There is no pub nearby so we are meeting on the little car park that sits between Lawrence Street and Waterfall Road on the Left if you were travelling towards Thorns Road. We will meet in The Windsor Castle, Lye afterwards.

Please note that our planned Summer 2012 planning meeting has also been brought forward to discuss the River Stour litterpick taking place on Sunday 25th March. This meeting has changed from Wednesday 28th March to Sunday 18th March from 730pm at The New Inn, Cherry Street. Norton.

Next up is the old stomping ground of The Queensway in Gauden Road Wollescote. Sunday 22nd January at 2pm on The Queensway Pub car park is where we will be meeting.

The Stourbridge Litter League

Hello Litterpickers,

We have compiled a non-scientific league table of the of the dirtiest and the cleanest areas of Stourbridge based on 26 litterpicks the group has held since it’s inception. Number 1 represents the biggest grotspot………

1. 85 Bags Stourbridge East (Mill Race Lane/Birmingham St)
2. 84 Bags Amblecote
3. 58 Bags Norton
4. 40 Bags Wollescote
5. 38 Bags Wollaston
6. 26 Bags Stourbridge West (Old Quarter/Mary Stevens Park)
7. 21 Bags Lye
8.= 12 Bags Wordsley and Pedmore

As we say, this is not scientific, but to the East of The Town Centre and Amblecote seem to be by far the most littered part of Stourbridge. We will continue to help put this right in the long term, but it’s MPs, Governments and Councils who can make the changes needed in legislation to put an end to this vandalism and not a small group of community minded people.

Litter remains a massive problem at Corbett Hospital

16,000 Tin cans are put to good use

2011 proved to be a busy year for Tidy Stourbridge. Separating the waste materials where practical to do so, they collected in excess of 420 large sacks of general litter over the year, endless numbers of glass bottles which went to recycling bins and an astounding 320 Kg of drinks cans. To put scale onto that final figure, with an average 50 cans per kilogram that is some 16,000 individual cans! These cans were crushed, sorted into steel and aluminium and then ‘weighed in’ for cash. As a consequence, a three figure sum has been donated to a cancer care charity which has been benefitting from similar income generated from street picked cans by one of the volunteers 86 year old Mother and her friends for many years. Grateful thanks is given to H A Mason, Metal Merchants who added £10 to the total after the end of year ‘weigh in’.

Tidy Stourbridge is a group of volunteers of all ages and social background, who every fortnight or so convene and spend an hour, sometimes more, picking litter from the streets and public areas of the greater Stourbridge area; additional volunteers are always welcomed; refuse sacks, litter pickers, gloves and high visibility vests supplied. All equipment has been provided by various corporate sponsors and Dudley Council.
